Growing my career in Neylons

With Deidre Mc Carthy

At Neylons we hire over 95% of people at entry level. We believe this is the start of a journey to bring people on a journey to be the best they can be. Our own CEO, Maria Sava, started as a general operative. Read our Academy Graduate Deirdre McCarthy’s recent interview on how she grew her career in Neylons.

Tell us about you

I started working as a Kitchen Assistant in a residential care home in Kinsale in September 2013.

In 2016 Neylons Facility Management took over the running of this residential facility and a year later my Manager Daiva put my name forward to join The Neylons Academy For Growth.

What opportunity did Neylons offer you?

First they offered me the opportunity to graduate from the Academy. Neylons also offered me a full time job as Chef/supervisor.

What challenges did you have to deal with and how did you overcome them?

A lot of very different challenges arise and the Academy has helped me a lot mostly to stay calm, communicate well, be motivated & organised and stay positive. One of my challenge was an issue with a supplier regarding quality and delivery. I dealt with this and the quality has been very good since.

What does a day in your life look like?

Every week day is very busy and I always keep my life very well balanced between work and home life. As a mum an usual day would be organised around getting the kids off to school, cooking dinner, giving rides to the kids to rugby, ballet…., At work, I cook for the first half of the day and  get organised for the next day. The second half of my day involves working on Flex, assisting my Manager and attending to the customers / co workers needs.

What do you like the most in your job?

I love to see the Sisters happy and also my co workers . It makes things easier for everyone all round. I love cooking but equally I am really enjoying working on Flex /dealing with the customer /suppliers etc…..

What advice would you like to give to employees who would like to move on to a new position at Neylons?

My advice would be to be a team player, apply for the Neylons Academy For Growth as it will build your confidence, knowledge, capability and prove yourself to the company. Neylons have great opportunities for those willing and able.
